SCOTLAND’S first Commonwealth gymnastic gold medallist Steve Frew put a group of schoolchildren through their paces on a visit to Aberdeenshire.
The 37-year-old from Falkirk, who created history when he claimed gold in the rings at the 2002 games in Manchester, spent the day at Kemnay Academy.
A group of pupils, including youngsters from Kinellar and Kintore primaries, were mentored in several gymnastic activities and treated to a classroom session when Frew discussed his experiences including his own inspiring struggle through sport.
Frew overcame height disadvantages and the difficulties of growing up and representing Scotland as a mixed-race athlete to progress through the gymnastic ranks and reach the pinnacle in Manchester.
He became Scotland’s only gymnast in the Great Britain team at just 14, before finally realising his dream of Commonwealth gold at the age of 29.
Frew, who was representing the Sky Sports Living for Sport programme, said: “I enjoyed visiting the school and seeing the young people there get involved with Sky Sports Living for Sport, giving them the encouragement to be the best they can be.”
David Allan, PE Teacher at Kemnay Academy, said: “It’s very exciting to have such an inspiring figure as Steve Frew give up his time for us like this.
“The pupils were looking forward to his visit and really worked hard to make the day a success.”
