Cornish is upset by late withdrawal

INVERNESS Amateur Boxing Club coach Lawrie Redfearn admitted last night that he and his super-heavyweight Gary Cornish were disappointed by the 11th hour withdrawal of scheduled Scottish championship semi-final opponent James McEvoy.

Stirling’s McEvoy was due to take on Cornish at Aberdeen's Treetops Hotel last night. McEvoy withdrew at the last minute yesterday, citing a refusal by his employer to grant him time to travel north to Aberdeen.

It was bad news for Cornish, who was really fired up for last night's semi-final first leg bout.

Redfearn said: “Gary needs bouts to keep sharp and fit for the finals on March 26.”

But now he won't be in ring action again until next week when he challenges Glasgow's Mike McDonough in a straight title deciding final at Coatbridge as Larkhall's James Perry also pulled out of his semi-final at the Treetops Hotel last night, too.
