FRASERBURGH postal worker Mark Cameron won the Scottish open surfing competition staged at Thurso East at the weekend.

The 32-year-old completed a gruelling programme to retain the title and earn a wild card place to compete in next month’s world qualifying series at the same venue.

Cameron could also feature in plans to enter a separate Scottish team in international competitions.

He won his third crown in a row after edging out former winner Chris Noble, from Thurso, in the four-man final. Cameron said: “Taking part in the worlds last year was a terrific experience.

“Former world champion Sunny Garcia was in my heat and it was a great buzz being in the water at the same time as him.”

Noble is waiting to learn whether the runner-up spot will be good enough earn him a place in the WQS event.

Five minutes before the open competition, Cameron had won the masters when he got the vote, just ahead of Dunbar surf school operator Sam Christopherson.

Jill Noble made it a Broch double after winning the women’s title.
