COVE moved one point clear at the top of the Highland League after grabbing an early lead through Robbie Henderson.
They had to wait until the final minute before finding a decisive second goal through substitute Phil Reid.
The first goal arrived in 16 minutes when Martin Johnstone swept the ball into the path of Henderson, who nicked and steered a low drive in off the far post.
Cove’s Jordan Heads headed against the bar before half-time and forced goalkeeper Ricky Horne into a superb save after the interval.
Rothes almost pounced on the break when Neale Davidson burst through but keeper Stuart McKenzie was sharp off his line to block.
A combination of Horne and the woodwork kept Cove at bay before Reid curled home a neat second goal in stoppage time.
