Copacabana rings changes at Deeside group

A GROUP of Deeside musical enthusiasts are getting set to return to the boards with their production of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana.

The Deeside Music Society has undergone a transformation since it last performed the show, Anything Goes, two years ago.

After the 2008 show many long-term members retired from the society, leaving it facing a rebuilding process. Member Ian Murray, 62, said the society had managed to attract new members and only six of those involved in the last show remained.

Mr Murray said: “It was the musical director’s idea. He picked it and we approved it, we all backed it 100%.

“It’s a fun, lively show.”

Mr Murray said the show will feature an orchestra of around a dozen people and a cast of more than 15.

“Last year was a rebuilding year, lots of members retired and we had to start from scratch,” he said.

“There’s quite a lot of new members, probably only six of the old stalwarts are left, everyone else is new. The new members are looking forward to it but of course there are some nerves.”

He added that the show was as good as any previously put on by the society which have included Annie and Jesus Christ Superstar.

The family-friendly show begins on Monday and continues until March 20. Each show begins at 7.30pm at the Deeside Community Theatre in Aboyne Academy with tickets priced at £10 available from the school’s reception.
