Aberdeen defender Jerel Ifil has felt the pain of relegation and he is determined to ensure the Dons do not run the risk of suffering a similar fate.
Ifil was part of the Swindon Town side which tumbled into England’s basement division in 2006.
Aberdeen have a 10-point advantage over bottom club Falkirk and although it should be sufficient, they need to arrest a slide of eight SPL matches without victory to avoid getting embroiled in a relegation scrap.
Ifil, who is hoping to keep his place in the side for today’s visit of Dundee United said: “It wasn’t a nice experience but it happened.
“We bounced back the following year. That’s all you can do, rather than focusing on the negatives.
“The next season we made ourselves stronger than we were before.
“No one wants that scenario.
“You just have to give it your all, 100%, and dig in and character is part of it as well.
“You just have to be as positive as you can be and try and turn things round. There is no magic formula. It’s up to us at the end of the day.
“Sometimes these things happen with teams. You can turn it round by being positive and by believing in yourself.”
Ifil admitted confidence and morale are rare commodities at Pittodrie at the moment but insisted the squad is determined to turn things round.
He said: “It is harder to be positive the longer the bad run goes on.
“Successful teams build on positive things and when you are not being as successful as you would like, you have to pick at what little positives there are.
“Morale isn’t as good as it could be, but we’re all professionals and you can’t let things affect you too much.
“The supporters have expectations and if they didn’t have them they would accept anything you threw at them. They want success.”
