Health and Safety legislation

Give thanks for laws that get in your hair

Published: 20/03/2010

There appears to be a health and safety aspect to almost everything in life these days – even a haircut, as performers demonstrated in a tongue-in-cheek send-up last night. Having a haircut wearing ear defenders and a high-visibility vest is, of course, taking things a bit far.

However, without health and safety just think how much more dangerous life would be these days. And wearing ear defenders might not be such a bad idea at the hairdressers, after all. At least you would avoid having to talk about the weather or your holidays.

The Health and Safety Regulations were a well intentioned piece of legislation which is, regretably, being used in utterly absurd ways. Surely it is possible for HSE officials, employers and indeed workers to exercise common sense on some of the trivial issues for which this regulation is used as an excuse to incite mayhem.
