Police on the alert for repeat of last week’s clashes

Extra police have been drafted on to the streets of Inverness this weekend to quell any repeat of last week’s clashes in the city involving rival youths.
Northern Constabulary has warned of “firm action” if there is anything like the trouble experienced last Friday night when youngsters, believed to be from the Merkinch and Kinmylies areas, reportedly fought running battles – some apparently armed with baseball bats.
Officers subsequently visited local secondary schools to liaise with staff as part of their efforts to trace those responsible for what was thought to have been an orchestrated incident.
Acting Chief Inspector Liz MacLeod said: “There are increased police patrols planned in Inverness this weekend to ensure that there are no large-scale gatherings of youths.
“There will be firm action taken in the event of any antisocial behaviour.
“Inquiries are still ongoing with regard to two disturbances last weekend in Kinmylies and statements are being taken."
Between 10 and 30 youths were reported to have been involved in last week’s clashes, shortly before 8pm near shops at Kinmylies.
A number of teenagers were injured. Police attended and the crowd dispersed.
Inverness West SNP councillor Pauline Munro said: “I welcome the response of both local high schools, the police and the council.
“The longer-term issue is to look at the provision of youth services in the Inverness area as a whole. There is a consultation being carried out into future funding of youth work. That’s something I’ll be taking part in and monitoring closely. It may well be that young people do not want to engage, but we’ve got to try.”
