New art group out to draw more members

A NEW north-east art group is appealing for members.

South Aberdeenshire Abstracts was recently set up to provide support and opportunities for artists to exhibit their work.

The artists, from the Stonehaven area, have joined together to show off their abstract work and have already attracted nine members.

Group founder Jacky Niven, who is also chairwoman, said: “We want to create opportunities to exhibit our paintings alongside other abstract work.

“As a group of like-minded artists we can use strength in numbers to seek opportunities, identify suitable venues with the kind of traffic that’s interested in seeing and buying our work and we can even put on our own exhibitions.

“I started off as a wildlife artist painting puffins and as I got a bit braver started experimenting with the abstract works. The challenge is finding suitable places to exhibit this work.

“So far we’ve basically pulled together our constitution and set wheels in motion to hold exhibitions.

“We want to keep it small. If there are 30 of us the galleries are unlikely to have the space. I’d say the maximum would be around 12.”

The group has already launched its website www.southaberdeenshireab stracts.org.uk and has plans for a debut show in the summer and during North East Open Studios in September.

The group is also seeking sponsorship to help fund its shows.
