A WOMAN appeared in court yesterday charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and child abandonment.

Inita Gavenaite or Dzinguviene, 25, appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court following an investigation by police into the discovery of a baby’s body in a flat at Fraserburgh.

Dzinguviene, whose address was given in court papers as High Street, Fraserburgh, appeared from custody for the brief hearing in private before Sheriff David Hall.

A Lithuanian interpreter was also present.

Dzinguviene, who was represented in court by Peterhead-based solicitor Stuart Flowerdew, made no plea and was remanded in custody.

After the hearing, fiscal David Thorburn said she had appeared on a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice and an alleged offence under Section 12 of the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act.

Section 12 of the act relates to incidents of assault, ill-treatment, neglect and abandonment of children under the age of 16.

Both offences are alleged to have been committed at Fraserburgh this month.

A Crown Office spokesman said Dzinguviene was expected to appear in court again next Thursday.

Police launched an investigation earlier this week after the body of a day-old boy was found in a flat in Fraserburgh’s High Street.

The discovery was made around noon on Tuesday.

High Street was closed between its junctions with Caroline Place and Cross Street, and the area around the flat where the body was found was cordoned off with police tape as the investigation began.

Members of a police search team wearing protective suits examined the property, which is above the offices of East Coast Insurance and Partridge’s clothes shop.

Forensic experts had already carried out a detailed examination of the flat and removed brown paper bags, as well as filming the block’s entrance hallway.
