COUNCILLORS will be urged to block plans to build a workshop in the countryside tomorrow.
Local blacksmith Ray Gardiner wants to build the premises at Newton Farm, Lyne of Skene, near Westhill, to expand his business.
Planners say the proposal should be refused because it goes against Aberdeenshire Council’s policy about building in the countryside.
But Mr Gardiner insists there are no other suitable or available locations in the area.
In a supporting letter he says the site is ideal because he has built up good working relationships with many local businesses.
“If I were to move from the area this relationship could be lost and my business may suffer,” he said.
“I am a country blacksmith of a dying trade and would enjoy passing on my skills to younger people if I had suitable premises to do so.”
A report for councillors on the Garioch area committee, which will debate the proposal tomorrow, says the applicant has made a “professional case” for the application.
But it adds: “Notwithstanding the value a blacksmith brings to the rural community, particularly farming, it is evident that a large part of the business is non-agricultural related.
“Employment-related development (non-agricultural) should not be located in the open countryside simply because it is cheaper or more convenient to do so.”
