A teenager who lives in council care in Aberdeenshire is planning a return trip to Nepal this year to help improve the lives of youngsters living in one of the poorest and most remote parts of the world.
Last November James McDonald, 17, took part in a charity trek organised by Who Cares? Scotland, a group that provides advice and support to young people in care.
He was so moved by the plight of pupils he visited during his 10-day trek that he will be returning exactly one year later to help improve their rundown premises.
“We had never met pupils or teachers who were so proud of their school, and children who were so enthusiastic about their education. It made a huge impression on all of us,” said James, who lives in council care in the Garioch. He was one of a group of young people taking part in the trip of a lifetime that marked the charity’s 30th anniversary by celebrating the success of youngsters who receive care.
The group vowed to help improve conditions at rural Chiti Tilahar School after finding out it had no running water and primitive sanitary facilities, despite the fact 900 children attended. Some walk more than two miles over mountainous Himalayan terrain to attend classes.
Last year James was accompanied by Inverurie-based residential care officer Paul Morrell , and the 54-year-old will be returning with the young Aberdeenshire adventurer this year. They will work with three other young people and adult supporters from Scotland to install a clean water supply and build a toilet block.
“James and I are immensely proud to be part of the project that will make such a huge improvement to conditions in the school and surrounding community. We can’t wait to return to Nepal,” said Mr Morrell.
The north-east pair are now planning fundraising events to meet the £3,400 needed to cover the cost of their travel and accommodation. Student James has kept fit as a member of Insch Boxing Club and by working out at the Garioch Sports Centre in Inverurie.
