bigotry behind Soaring racist assaults and verbal abuse

Attacks on English a disgrace to north-east

Anti-English bigotry has fuelled the spiralling number of racist incidents which have “disgraced” the north-east.

Despite a fall in the number of incidents across Scotland between 2007-08 and 2008-09, official figures showed that the number of physical and verbal attacks recorded by Grampian Police soared from 390 to 649.

And the most targeted group in the region was white British people.

Last night, as a national retailer confirmed that it will stock controversial “Anyone but England” T-shirts during the World Cup, campaigners were in little doubt that the “British” people being assaulted and subjected to verbal abuse were English.

Someone becomes the victim of a racist attack every 14 hours in Grampian, and more than 1,000 racist incidents were recorded in the region over the two-year period, compared with 748 in neighbouring Tayside.

Broken down, the figures reveal that of the 1,039 incidents in Grampian, most – 196 – were against “white British” people.

White Irish people were the victims of just five incidents over the same period.

Africans were the second-most targeted group, being the victims of 154 incidents, while “other white” people, including eastern Europeans, were the victims in 137 incidents.

Indians were targeted 135 times and Pakistanis 79 times.

North-east MSP Richard Baker, Labour’s justice spokesman, said the figures were “shocking” and that action needed to be taken to tackle attitudes in the region.

“This is a disgrace,” he added.

“Lets be realistic about it – the racist incidents against white British people will have been against English people.

“In the past there has perhaps been incidents where people have made light-hearted comments about English people, but quite often this is obviously going beyond that.

“We have a huge number of people from other parts of the UK who live and work in the north-east and they are vital to our way of life and economy, particularly in the oil and gas industry.

“The vast majority of people in the north-east are in no way racist – but there is obviously a minority who think it’s acceptable to behave in this way.”

Grampian Police community relations officer, Sergeant John Ledingham, said: “These figures show that racism is not necessarily about colour, but can also be about nationality.

“Behaviour of this kind has no place in a civilised, multi-cultural society and we will continue not only to investigate complaints but, with assistance from partner organisations, to work to combat the prejudices which lead to these kinds of incidents.”

A spokesman for Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: “The Scottish Government and all mainstream political parties are committed to an inclusive, diverse Scotland, and every single such incident is to be deplored.”

Robert Gordon University sociologist, Chris Thorpe, who is originally from Kent but has lived in Aberdeen for 25 years, said he had been the victim of abuse in the past.

He said: “One would expect anti-English sentiment to be behind the increase in incidents against white British people. I have been on the receiving end of anti-English comments, but it is always written off as ‘Auld Enemy’ banter. But it often does not feel like banter if you are on the receiving end.”

Last night, it emerged that music retailer HMV is now stocking “ABE – Anyone But England” shirts.

Earlier this year, police launched an investigation at the Slanj of Scotland branch in Aberdeen after a complaint was made about similar T-shirts. Slanj’s assistant manager, Jamie Wilkinson, 23, insisted the slogan was nothing more than “harmless football banter”.

But referring to the “ABE” T-shirts, Mr Thorpe said: “This shirt is nothing less than a poorly-veiled attempt to cash in on anti-English sentiment among Scots.

“If the shirt had emblazoned across it ‘Anyone but Africa’ would it be acceptable? I think not. If it had ‘Anyone but Catholics’ would it be acceptable? Again, I think not.”

Last night HMV said it was stocking the “ABE” shirts in Aberdeen due to “local demand”.

A spokeswoman added: “There have been no issues to date, and it seems the shirts are being worn as part of the friendly and humorous rivalry that has long existed between Scottish and English football fans – surely people can see they’re just intended as a bit of fun?

“Only last week Kenny Dalglish was on TV cheering on the USA against England – is that really any different?

“As a retailer we believe that customers should be free to make up their own minds, and that we should not censor the choice available to them so long as this is presented in a responsible manner.”

Trevor Phillips, the head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said the slogan was “good-natured banter that was unlikely to cause offence”.

With a Scottish father yet born and raised south of the border my accent is of an English nature and I have been subjected to numerous bigotry remarks, insults and threats of physical violence. It’s all very well sitting on the sidelines discounting this abuse but the experiences are far from pleasant. On more occasions than I care to remember I have been out in Aberdeen with friends and complete strangers decide to walk up to you and hurl abuse after hearing your accent. The most disappointing occasion was when I was at a restaurant with my family; my Aberdeen born wife and our son were enjoying a meal when two men approached us and just hurled abuse for being English. Like many others who have contributed to these comments, my wife always thought the fact those racist remarks again the English were no big deal until she was on the receiving end. However the ABE T shirts should be taken in context and not drawn into these findings generated in 2007/8, the shirts are supposed to be harmless fun and they will not aggravate the situation, with or without the T shirts the bigots will exists!

What used to be called name calling in the heat of the moment... is now classed as full on racial abuse.. It is an easy way of the person receiving the insults to get back at the perpetrator..Sticks and stones and all that, doesn't appear to apply any more... Boo!! Hooo!

I think people are missing the point, this is disastrous news and nothing at all to be laughed at or dismissed lightly, people across the country will now be thinking that the North East is the most racist part of Scotland if not the UK. Lets face it, this is a disgrace, racism is not something anyone should be taking lightly and I for one feel immensely uncomfortable that so many people have been made to feel different, inferior, humiliated, all humans are equal and have equal rights to enjoy the North Easts good quality of life without feeling conscious of a select few idiots who perpetrate these shameful antics.

I do not think that the ABE t-shirts are related to the increase in racist incidents reported however, but how can anyone decide the crossing line between harmless fun and victimisation or racism?

Malcom i am very sorry to hear you have been threatened so many times, i think you must be very unlucky to be subjected to this on so many occasions, i myself cant understand it, you should have reported the people to the restraunt manager and they would get arrested, its the only way to deal with people like this.I am married to a black women and see everything from all sides, i think it depends how comments are put to you and in what situation. i dont think the N. East has much problem, and i think they are isolated incidents, just report them

In Inverness there is "LIMEYS OUT" written on a wall which as far as I can understand is an Australian wanting the English out of Scotland, never saw the sense in that one. Truth is I don't like being called Jock, but I don't think its racist. Although if I was called Jock in an aggressive or antagonistic sense then I can see why it would be taken that way.

I agree with the many that this is harmless banter, but ask what the readers would think if a person wearing one of these tshirts went down to England and was attacked. Would you say it was banter or would that be racism.....its a very fine line..... The biggest anti-english racist is currently leading Scotlands Parliament and from the NEast so is it any wonder we come top of the polls.... I am proud to be English and have lived in Aberdeen for 20 years.....I love the banter and certainly give back as much as I take. So as not to disappoint.....has anyone mentioned 1966........maybe a new complete set of rants could be achieved when England lift the world cup next month..... USA USA - Useless Scotland Again......

Very sorry to hear that Malcom, and truly sorry about it all, makes me hang my head in same. Also I can sympathise all my working life I have been singled out because people think I'm not Scottish! I get all the time offshore "Fae are you from? Your nae Scottish! My mother was I nursery nurse and spoke "proper" to the little kids, it rubbed off on me. But that doesn't stop the scumbags. Also surprised more people are not blaming the SNP for this.

Hall, Nice try but wrong. The SNP and the first minister fights for Scotland, nothing racist about that. Also after years and years of assett stripping by westminster resulting in ten of thousands of scottish job losses, no wonder there is anti English feeling. Maybe yopu think that it's ok that the Scots help pay for your English football teams New Wembley but I don't, Scotland pays through the nose for this unjust Union and you know it. I wonder how you English will treat Andy Murray in this years Wimbledon. Maybe you think it would have been good that he got "it" at Dumblane, like some of your countryfolk have said.

Hall, how much did the SFA and SRU get from the UK goverment to help pay for Murrayfield and Hampden? Care to comment? "Those who follow football in the UK will be well aware of the debacle which is the new Wembley Stadium. This is a stadium which was supposed to be rebuilt back in 2000 and finished in 2003 but instead work began in 2003 and was not finished until 2007. There is also the fact that the stadium was supposed to cost £240 million yet came in with a final figure of £790 million. So is new Wembley the pinnacle of technology for the UK football scene in the future or a large white elephant?" http://www.propertycommunity.com/property-in-the-uk/110-is-new-wembley-the-great-hope-for-the-future-or-a-great-white-elephant.html

I remember visiting family when I was a boy down in Stevenage, the thing I remember most was when we were heading to a shopping precinct being told not to say anything as if the heard my Scottish accent there would be trouble! This was 1982, don't think it made the local press down there though!

Well, Robert, I beg to differ. I'm English and my experience of the way Scottish people are regarded in England is very different. People in England (and of course there will be exceptions) like Scotland the romantic notion of the perceived Scottish culture, north of the border. If Scotland is involved in a sporting event but England isn't, the English would support Scotland (again, there will be exceptions, but I'm absolutely positive this applies to the majority). Now, turn the tables and England is in a sporting event and Scotland isn't, the Scottish people (as a majority) will most certainly not support England. I'm not remotely interested in sport, but, as a social observation, it's very much indicative of the simmering hatred (or possible jealousy) of England/the English that generally exists under the surface in Scotland. Yes, a generalisation, but as an English person living in Scotland (currently at least), something I totally believe based on what I have personally witnessed. To be fair, a lot of Scots aren't anti-English (and let's not confuse this with banter - everyone likes a bit of light hearted banter!) Indeed, the bonafide anti-English rhetoric and insults do seem to be the preserve of the less intelligent members of the indigenous population. I also think, sadly, such sentiment is also more prevalent in the North East of Scotland than maybe somewhere like Edinburgh. One last thing - did anyone see the "End London Rule" graffiti in several locations on the A96? It took weeks to remove it/paint over it - doesn't that speak volumes too...?

Maybe its the way that SKY and every advert on TV rams it down our throats that Englandshire will win the world cup. The thing that gets me is that do SKY not realise that there are people in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland that pay for Sky!!! Ive worked in Engerland as the only Scotman onboard an oil rig and been completely ignored by people for the fact that im Scottish so any of you English bleeting on about being abused in restaurants, at least you had the option to walk out, what am i meant to do, jump overboard!!! get a life!!!

Billy, I think you've proved a point with your comments. So people in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland pay for Sky. So what? Because of that, what should Sky do? Apologise to viewers in those countries for daring to support the only British country in the World Cup? We all live in Britain! To be honest, with nonsensical views like that, I'm not surprised you were ignored by people onboard the oil rig. No doubt you kept banging on about all the oil belonging to Scotland, etc... So I doubt very much you were ignored because you were Scottish, probably more due to tedium. As I said, sentiments such as yours tend to be more commonplace amongst those Scots with lower intelligence...

Of course Mr Clackson is only joking: "The upsides go on and on. Without Scotland on the electoral map, Cameron would have a majority in the House of Commons, so he could lose the Cleggawallah, we’d never again have a Scottish prime minister and Scotland would become abroad" "I’m afraid it has to be Scotland. It costs the UK £5 billion a year and saving that, on top of the £6 billion in cuts from the fat elsewhere, would go a long way towards solving our debt crisis" "I want to make it plain to my Scottish readers that I do not want to throw you onto the cutting-room floor. I shall miss you with your funny skirts and your ginger hair. The SAS will miss you, too, since over the years 75% of its soldiers are said to have been from north of the border. But we simply cannot afford to stay together any more. Goodbye, then, and good luck" http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/jeremy_clarkson/article7148883.ece

Mr Reid, The SNP fight for Scotland!!!! So what went wrong at the elections....Alex was banking on getting more of a say in a Labour led coaltion, but as per usual....HE GOT IT WRONG....Now Scotland will have less of a say in UK matters than ever before. What have the SNP delivered for the NEast...Where is the western peripheral road...Where are our sporting facitities....You talk of Wembley, what about the scottish parliament building...a great way to waste money. The Scottish Parliament has just delivered another layer of overpaid cheating MPs, more committees and more fat cats living off our taxes. Not exactly what we would have liked at the beginning....We are stronger as a Union not as an independant. Who would have bailed out the Bank of Scotland if we were alone.....
