Children take to tribal life of ancient Scots warriors

CHILDREN have been given a taste of what life was like in Angus 2,000 years ago.

Youngsters dressed up as Picts, the ancient warrior tribe which once lived in the region, at the Pictavia history centre in Brechin.

They painted their faces and dressed up in Pictish clothes during Saturday’s Pict For a Day event.

They also learned some words in the ancient language of Ogham and listened to tales of how people lived two millennia ago.

Jenny Sharp, an assistant at the centre, said the youngsters learned that many Angus place names could be traced back to the Picts.

She said: “Events like this are always really, really popular and the kids get really into it.

“The whole point of it is that they are able to experience what life was like as a Pict.

“The topic of Picts may seem like a bit of a niche subject, but there is lot to learn, such as all their symbols and language.”

The children, all aged between seven and 12, were each given a Pictish name, and they made traditional brooches and shields.

Further events for children will be held at the centre over the summer months.
