Some of the best blues acts from Europe and the US gathered in Dundee over the weekend for one of the country’s biggest free music festivals.

Thousands of blues fans flocked to the city for the 16th annual Dundee Blues Bonanza, described by organisers as “the best yet”.

Fans welcomed major acts Mud Morganfield, son of legendary blues singer Muddy Waters, Alabama blues musician Lil’ Jimmy Reed and gospel and blues singer Angela Brown.

Other performers, including The Fastliners, Bob Hall, the Snapping Turtles and Wolftrain, also proved popular with the crowds.

A total of 130 gigs were performed at 30 city-centre venues during the three days. Ms Brown, Mr Reed and Mr Hall also helped out with the junior blues workshop yesterday afternoon.

During the event, the artists gave the young aspiring musicians the chance to experiment with a selection of instruments, including guitars, harmonicas, and a blues and boogie piano.

They were also given tips on singing the blues. Those taking part in the workshop, run in partnership with Dundee Contemporary Arts, then got the chance to perform a concert in the Jute Bar, at the Nethergate.

Voluntary committee chairman, Bob Telford, said last night: “As always, it has been amazing. Everywhere you go music has been playing at a high quality. Some of the venues have been so full you just couldn’t move, and people have been saying this has been the best bonanza yet.”

The bonanza, which receives support from the Angus and Dundee innovation and development fund, drew to a close last night with a concert in Deja Vu at Cowgate, which featured several of the artists who played throughout the weekend.
