student’s predicament
The loneliness of being first

STUDENT Alex Jarvis might not, at first glance, have much in common with Scottish inventor Alexander Graham Bell, but they have both discovered that there are drawbacks in being first. Alex devoted hour after hour to learning the international language Esperanto, but is unable to practise his new skill because he can’t find anyone else in Aberdeen who speaks it.
He is now in a similar predicament to Bell, who must have been hugely excited by inventing the telephone until it dawned on him that he had no one to ring to tell them the good news.
