Imrie strike stuns Caley Thistle

Same team, entirely different result. Inverness manager Terry Butcher stuck with the starting 11 which thrashed Dundee United at Tannadice but was left bitterly disappointed after watching his side stumble at home against Hamilton.

Somewhat predictably, former Caley Thistle midfielder Dougie Imrie silenced his critics in the Caledonian Stadium stands with a superb 30-yard goal after just 38 seconds to seal victory for the Lanarkshire club.

Caley Jags were unable to reproduce the dazzling forward inter-play which bamboozled the Dundee United defence and, instead, found themselves attempting to prevent a patchwork Hamilton side from increasing its lead.

Accies had lost their previous two SPL games against Aberdeen and Hearts, conceding eight goals in the process, but, in Nigel Hasselbaink, the nephew of former Chelsea forward Jimmy Floyd, Accies have found a player of great promise.

In his first game in Scottish football the 19-year-old showed the speed and strength his uncle was renowned for in the Premier League, posing the Inverness back four a multitude of problems.

Hamilton were physically robust, strong in the tackle and quick to attack on the counter against an Inverness side which failed to muster a shot on goal in the entire first half.

The prolific Adam Rooney was close to equalising in the second period when Andrew Graham cleared his goal-bound chip, but it was an isolated chance in a below-par display.

Despite their abysmal start to the season, Hamilton produced a resilient performance which gave an indication of just how difficult Inverness will find life back in the SPL.

Jonny Hayes and Nick Ross, who were instrumental in dismantling Dundee United, were subdued by the Accies defence on the flanks, which meant Eric Odhiambo and Rooney had little to work with in attack.

Adopting the same tactics which have proved so successful for Caley Jags away from home in the last few seasons, Billy Reid's men were content to hold back and break at speed when they regained possession.

Richie Foran should return from injury for Caley Jags next month to re-establish the potent Irish attacking trident he formed with Hayes and Rooney last season, while Gil Blumenshtein will add creativity in midfield and Chris Innes steel in defence.

But it was a former Caley Thistle player who made the difference for Hamilton.

Imrie dispossessed Lee Cox and unleashed a ferocious left-foot strike from 30 yards which flew past Ryan Esson barely after kick-off.

Inverness never recovered and suffered an early setback when Kevin McCann was forced off with a groin injury and had to be replaced by Ross Tokely.

Not long afterwards, Tokely was booked for hauling back Hasselbaink after he raced through the Inverness defence.

Marco tested Esson with a low shot before the break and Hasselbaink flew by Russell Duncan and Hayes on the left to set up Flavio Paixao but the winger delayed his shot allowing Esson to parry five minutes into the second period.

Inverness responded when Ross sent a cross just behind Rooney after Odhiambo had found the 18-year-old winger in space on the right.

Caley Jags looked set to equalise after David Proctor's accurate long ball found Rooney, the Irishman lofted a shot over the oncoming Tomas Cerny but Graham managed to track back and hack clear as the ball trundled towards the empty net.

Butcher sent Tokely up front in a late attempt to draw level but Hamilton held firm to claim their first win of the season.
