Art exhibition on Scots identity coming to Highlands

Published: 09/09/2010

AN ART exhibition exploring Scottish national identity will visit schools in the Highlands and Inverness this month.

The tour, which began last week, is a partnership between The Travelling Gallery and the National Galleries of Scotland Outreach Team and is a follow-up to the hugely-successful Rough Cut Nation exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in August last year.

Impossible Nation includes work by eight artists, combining different media including drawing, painting, poetry and sculpture and exploring what being from Scotland means to young people today.

The Travelling Gallery team will also be giving talks Art o accompany the show and a number of artist-led workshops are available.

Travelling Gallery curator Alison Chisholm said: “I am delighted that we are able to bring Impossible Nation to schools and communities in the Highlands. I am sure each area will find it fascinating for many different reasons. The artists have made a fantastic job of transforming the Travelling Gallery – each time I am in the space I find something new.”

Today The Travelling Gallery is visiting pupils from Tongue Primary School and then making its way to Durness Primary tomorrow.

Next week it will visit Badcaul Primary on Monday and Gairloch High School on Tuesday. On Wednesday, September 15, it will be at Beauly Primary, followed by visits to Culloden Academy on Thursday, September 16, and Raigmore Primary on Friday, September 17.
