ORGANISERS of a sponsored beach stroll handed over thousands of pounds to charity last night.

More than 130 people took part in September’s Sandwalk between Newburgh and Balmedie, which is one of the Ellon and Balgownie rotary clubs’ biggest fundraisers.

Walkers were offered the opportunity to raise cash for four charities – Cancer Link Aberdeen and North (Clan), Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (Chas), Erskine Hospital, and Teen Challenge – which each received a slice of £7,500 last night. Representatives of event sponsor, the Trump Organisation, attended the event, on the night a documentary aired about the developer’s plans to build a £750million golf resort near Balmedie.

Sandwalk committee chairman John Wren said: “From an organisational point of view we have been delighted with the support of local firms and all the people who entered. In addition, the involvement of the charities, all of whom were represented on the day, has been great.”

The date for next year’s Sandwalk has yet to be set.
