Brave teenager dies surrounded by family

An inspirational north-east teenager who showed remarkable bravery despite facing two life-threatening illnesses has died at home surrounded by her family.

Relatives and friends lined up one by one to say goodbye to Nicole Matthew after doctors broke the news that she had just two days to live.

The 19-year-old, who was a twin, was diagnosed at the age of five with ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) – a genetic condition that affects just one out of 100,000 people worldwide.
