Darling labels SNP currency plan ‘bonkers’

Alistair Darling has warned against “utterly bonkers” plans to use the pound in an independent Scotland – claiming the nation could follow Ireland into financial ruin.
The ex-chancellor even suggested the Scottish Government would effectively have to go to the rest of the UK for budget approval if it decided to keep sterling.
In a significant new attack on the SNP, he compared an independent Scotland’s position in the UK to Ireland’s in the eurozone, if interest rates were controlled by the Bank of England.
