Scots pig sector stunned by meat factory closure threat

Scotland’s pig sector said it was stunned last night after the Dutch owners of the country’s main processing business said they intended shutting it with 1,745 job losses.

Vion Food Group has started a 90-day consultation with its 1,150 staff and 545 agency workers at Hall’s of Broxburn, which has been losing £79,000 a day.

Chairman Peter Barr said it was an extremely sad day and one which Vion had strenuously tried to avoid for the past four years after it acquired Hall’s as part of its takeover of the financially troubled Grampian Country Food Group. It is the third time the site has faced a closure threat.
