Bulk of pork producers are based in north-east

The closure threat to Hall’s of Broxburn leaves Scotland’s 221 pig farmers with a potential problem as the business slaughters 74% of the nation’s pigs.

The bulk of producers are in the north-east, including NFU Scotland pigs committee chairman Philip Sleigh who farms at Netherton of Mounie, Oldmeldrum.

The possible closure was a shock, but he said the main worry for farmers at the moment was over the cost of feed, particularly soya which had soared.
