Winter rations are firmly in the focus of the north-east’s organic monitor farm.

Visitors to an open day held by brothers Kenny and Leslie Cooper at Mains of Thornton, Bourtie, Inverurie, saw two of the crops they intend feeding to their livestock.

They are growing an oat and pea mix on 12 acres. The intention is to combine it and propcorn treat the grain. The straw from it will be put through their feed wagon as part of the total mixed ration.

The other addition to the cropping pattern is a Swift spring barley and Redstart mix of hybrid brassicas on 83 acres, of which 20 has been undersown with Westerwolds grass seed.
