Gunman kills 12 in US cinema massacre

A gunman wearing a gas mask set off an unknown gas and fired into a crowded Colorado cinema at the midnight showing of the latest Batman movie, killing 12 people.

The attack left another 59 adults and children injured.

The gunman, who was arrested soon after, was named as 24-year-old James Holmes, a local man. He had an assault rifle, a shotgun and two pistols.

Acting on information from Holmes, FBI agents and police discovered his apartment had been booby-trapped. Five buildings had to be evacuated as the authorities determined how to make safe flammable and explosive material.
