A former Press and Journal photographer has been recognised in a national competition for his work capturing wildlife off the coast of his native Orkney.

Raymond Besant was awarded the top prize for filming wildlife in HD video in this year’s British Wildlife Photography Awards.

The 37-year-old pictured a flock of fulmars flying round the rugged cliffs off Orkney. The film was made in February and Mr Besant said by slowing down the footage he was able to capture the beauty and grace of the sea birds.

He said: “I am very pleased to be receiving the award. It’s a great honour to know you have been acknowledged by your peers and that they think your work is worthy.”
