Hutton chief departs after merger problems

One of the bosses of Scotland's newest agricultural research institute has departed suddenly just months after she admitted problems with the merger of the two centres that created it.

Staff at the James Hutton Institute have been told in a memo from chief executive Professor Iain Gordon that chief operating officer Karen Shaw was “no longer working" for it and had moved on to new challenges after what she recognised as having been “an exciting but turbulent" period in post.

Staff were unaware of any departure plan by her until they received Prof Gordon's memo last week.
