‘Independence closer than any time in 300 years’

Alex Salmond claimed yesterday that independence is closer than it has been for 300 years.

He also said Scotland could afford to leave the UK – and every family would be £1,000 better off if it did.

In his welcoming speech at the SNP conference in Perth, the first minister held up a copy of the so-called Edinburgh Agreement signed with Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday, paving the way for the independence referendum in 2014.
