Mainland drivers in line for cheaper fuel

THE UK Government is lining up a boost for hard-pressed motorists in mainland areas of the Highlands.

The Press and Journal can reveal that the Treasury is drawing up plans to extend its 5p-a-litre discount scheme for petrol and diesel – introduced in the islands in March – to other remote communities in the north.

Inverness MP Danny Alexander has spearheaded the project from the start and will announce the next stage at the Scottish Liberal Democrat conference at Dunfermline today.
