Scots soldiers facing battle against axe

Soldiers based in Scotland are expected to be among up to 5,300 troops facing the axe in the latest cost-cutting round by defence chiefs.

Compulsory job losses have not been ruled out, leading to “real uncertainty” for families of Army personnel at Scottish bases, potentially including the Black Watch at Fort George and 39 Engineers at Kinloss.

The redundancies were announced just a day after David Cameron warned Britain faced a “generational struggle” with Islamic extremism in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack in Algeria and conflict in Mali.
