Destruction left in wake as hurricane force winds batter Highlands, islands

Hurricane-force winds battered the Highlands and islands yesterday, causing travel chaos and leaving 5,000 homes without power.

A gust of 135mph was recorded on Cairn Gorm mountain and the ski resort was closed as winds consistently hit 114mph.

Engineers were still battling to restore electricity to about 2,000 homes last night.
