North on storm alert as blizzards blow in

THE Highlands and islands are braced for wild conditions today after monster waves, hurricane-force winds and blizzards swept the region yesterday.

The north is on severe weather alert for snow and gales, with mountain conditions forecast to be “atrocious”. Last night police warned motorists to take care on roads which will be affected by snow today following a spate of crashes yesterday.

Massive waves were recorded off the north-west coast of Lewis, peaking at more than 70ft yesterday.
