Decision on HQ for new fire service hub ‘disappointing’

Politicians from the Highlands and islands said yesterday they were disappointed after it was reported that the headquarters for the northern hub of the new single Scottish Fire Service will be in Aberdeen, not Inverness.

The news was revealed yesterday and immediately prompted fears over redundancies in control rooms throughout the region, although it is understood that no compulsory redundancies will come as a result of the decision.

Orkney councillor Andrew Drever, who is convener of the Highlands and Islands Fire Board, said remote and rural areas including Orkney and Shetland would have been better served from Inverness.
