He is the fourth most powerful man in the country and earns a six-figure salary, but Danny Alexander has still not bought new shoes.

Sitting in his office at the Treasury, he is wearing the same scuffed pair which made the headlines before Christmas, when he was caught out in a now famous photo of the Queen’s visit to Cabinet.

“I’ve got my birthday coming up in May,” jokes the Highland MP, who is also sporting shiny Union flag cufflinks.
