‘We tried frantically to save avalanche victims’

THREE climbers who died after an avalanche were left buried under tonnes of snow so hard it was like “concrete”.

One of the first people on the scene of the Cairngorms tragedy said survivors were desperately trying to dig for their missing companions.

Mountaineering Council of Scotland safety adviser Heather Morning said it had been “chaotic” as the rescue mission started.

It emerged yesterday that one of the dead was a student at the national outdoor training centre at Glenmore Lodge – which suffered its first fatality in 40 years.
