Disappointment at rape case statistics

Just nine out of 172 rape cases reported to the procurator fiscal over the past two years have ended in a conviction, the Press and Journal can reveal.

And out of the hundreds of sexual crimes reported in Grampian and the Highlands and islands, only 10% have resulted in a conviction. Last night, charities said the figures came as no surprise.

A total of 498 rape, attempted rape and sexual assaults were reported to the procurator fiscal between December 2010 and November last year.
