‘Local produce is cut above’

Scottish Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead has called for shorter supply chains to prevent a repeat of the horse-meat scandal rocking the British food industry.

He pressed for better tracking and for the use of high-quality ingredients at a meeting with retailers, manufacturers and government ministers in London yesterday.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons were among those who met him and UK Environment Secretary Owen Paterson.
