Cardinal resigns amid claims over behaviour

The Catholic Church in Scotland was thrown into turmoil yesterday after its leader dramatically resigned.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Britain’s most senior cleric, is facing allegations by three priests and one ex-priest of inappropriate behaviour dating back to the 1980s.

The 74-year-old, who has resigned as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh – a post he has held since 1985 – denies the claims.
