Police numbers still on the rise as single force looms

Police numbers across the north and north-east continue to rise as ministers claimed they have met a nationwide target for more officers.

The Scottish Government said its pledge of 1,000 extra officers was still being achieved.

However, opposition parties said the figures did not tell the whole story as more officers were taken off the beat to do backroom jobs.
