Aberdeen University student David Vernon, 20, enhanced his hopes of being selected to represent Scotland in January’s Celtic international by finishing third in the West of Scotland cross-country championships at Kilmarnock.

The third year medical student, who won the Scottish universities and colleges title at Aberdeen’s Balgownie playingfields last month, completed the 10km course in 34min 58sec.

Shettleston’s Mengisteab Tewoldeberhan won in 35:48, while his clubmate Lachlan Oates was runner-up in 35:23.
