Historic day with two 59s in the same event
Spain’s Jorge Campillo and South Africa’s Colin Nel both shot rounds of 59 in the Nelson Mandela championship in Durban yesterday.
The pair’s second-round totals are the first recorded 59s in European Tour history but both scores were achieved after using preferred lies after heavy downpours which left the course waterlogged.
Tournament organisers chose to reduce the event to 54 holes yesterday due to the weather conditions, with Campillo taking advantage of the preferred lies to card a sub-60 score and move joint top of the early overall leaderboard with England’s Matthew Baldwin.
