THE “something old, something new” belief has long been part of a bride’s wedding mix and a similar philosophy at a Scottish hotel has really captured the imagination of couples tying the knot.

South Queensferry hotel and restaurant Orocco Pier has become one of Scotland’s major hospitality success stories of recent years with about 3,000 people passing through its doors each week and the venue hosting about 100 weddings annually.

And it’s the breathtaking views – with the vista of the Forth Rail Bridge – coupled with the feel and flavour of a trendy 21st-century venue, which have wowed wedding guests since it opened more than four years ago.

Orocco Pier, which is a multi-award-winning operation, was created by Renaissance Ecosse trio Peter Wilson, Eleanor Cooke and Grant Manson. When they bought the business, the old Queensferry Arms, they inherited a turnover of about £400,000 and four staff. There are now more than 50 staff and the turnover is in excess of £2million.

Managing director Peter Wilson said: “Weddings are a major part of our business and we are proud of the way we create special occasions for so many people.

“Our wedding clients fall in love with the views and the unmistakable setting. The river as the backdrop for the day, and its changing moods into the evening and the night. In total, we can currently accommodate up to 120 guests, or 160 when it is more informal.”

The opportunity to have a civil wedding or civil partnership ceremony at the waters edge is one option but the venue also hosts ceremonies in its function suite Fuchsia or on its own private decking area.

Orocco Pier is also currently planning a major development to take it and its weddings business on to the next level. The £3.5million development will see a five-storey extension built on land that was originally used for housing malt barns, and also includes plans to convert a neighbouring flat and takeaway into a new reception hall.

There will be 28 bedrooms in total, including 15 with views to the Forth Rail Bridge; a new ballroom with a capacity for 300 people (double the existing capacity); a new restaurant, brasserie and oyster bar, and two public bars.
