Workers of all ages

THE negative image of the youth of today cannot help but influence the views of employers across the country. However, one north-east company has proved that young people can be a huge asset. Liam Shearer, 20, is helping his employer not only to grow, but expand its services by launching an innovative new product throughout Europe.

Portlethen-based ACI (Advanced Coating Initiative) has just become the first European company to offer InnerArmor to the oil&gas and manufacturing markets.

Liam said: “I first met ACI at a conference (Offshore Europe) in Aberdeen and discovered that a new division was being set up to introduce the new product.

“I am still studying geology and petroleum geology at Aberdeen University, but also want to gain practical industry experience – the launch of the new coating product really appealed to me and seemed like a great opportunity.

“I have always been drawn to engineering and secured employment as a sand lab engineer after my second year at university. Obviously, I’m aware that I’m quite young, but I hope that ACI recruited me as they saw my obvious enthusiasm and ambition, as well as my technical knowledge.”

Jim Davidson, managing director of ACI, added: “Liam is one of our youngest team members, but when we are recruiting, no matter what age a person is, they are employed because of their potential career development and how we see their personalities fitting with the ACI culture.”
