A former north-east minister and moderator of Aberdeen Presbytery has died.

The Rev Donald Rennie, who always said his consuming passion was in people, died in the city’s Roxburghe House on Wednesday after a long illness. Ordained in 1956, he served parishes in Scotland for 40 years, including Cults East Church near Aberdeen for 17 years.

In 1991, he became a full-time industrial chaplain with the proper title of Organiser for the Industrial Mission in the North-East. His chaplaincies included many organisations such as the Grampian Fire Brigade, the former Grampian Regional Council and many agricultural firms.

He was named the next moderator of Aberdeen Presbytery the same year he became an industrial chaplain but put it off for a year so he could give the industrial work his undivided attention.

He was also very much a part of the Iona community. Mr Rennie moved to Auchenblae with his wife Ann when he retired.

Mr Rennie, who was 77, is survived by his wife, five children and five grandchildren.

Last night, the Rev Bob Brown, of Queen’s Cross Church, Aberdeen, said: “He had great enthusiasm for his faith and for life. He was always an asset.”

After a funeral at West Mearns Parish Church, Auchenblae on April 16 at 12.15pm a service will be held at Aberdeen Crematorium at 2.55pm.
