Q What are superfoods and how can I incorporate them into my diet?

A Catherine Eddie, from Grampian Health Foods, says: Superfoods are foods that are supercharged with nutrients. In addition to essential vitamins and minerals, they tend to be a rich source of antioxidants.Antioxidants are thought to have many health benefits, from slowing down the ageing process to warding off a number of degenerative conditions. They do this by mopping up or neutralising the surplus negative charge carried by unstable molecular fragments. These so-called free radicals try to lose this charge by colliding with other molecules in a potentially destructive chemical process called oxidation. Oxidation can lead to premature ageing, poor circulation, impotence, cataracts, heart disease and diabetes. Antioxidants are therefore our main defence against oxidation or free radical attack. Foods rich in antioxidants include brightly coloured fruit and vegetables such as blueberries, oranges, papaya, goji berries, peppers, broccoli and tomatoes. These are often referred to as superfoods. There is, however, another contender for the title of superfood – one you may have already eaten without realising it. Ume is a Japanese fruit (often referred to as a plum, but is, in fact, an apricot) that has been used for centuries as a health-giving food. During the Middle Ages, Japanese samurai warriors are believed to have eaten ume to give them energy and counteract battle fatigue. Today, ume is still very much a part of Japanese cuisine and can be eaten pickled, pureed or in Japanese sauces and dressings. And its potential health benefits continue to attract attention. In addition to boosting energy levels and reducing adrenal stress, researchers believe that ume may help to support immunity and circulation. It may also support digestion and gall-bladder health, and due to its potent antioxidant properties, could be a handy ally in staying young and flexible.
