Doggy holiday
Published:
ACCORDING to research commissioned by Butcher’s Dog Food, 25% of dog owners are putting their best paws forward this year and planning on spending their holidays in Britain.
Alison Cockcroft, of Butcher’s Pet Food, said: “The annual summer holiday is a great excuse to spend time with your family and have fun together. Dogs need a break, too, so if you can take him along, he’ll reap the benefits. But remember, wherever you are, always be a responsible dog owner.
“Take note of our simple do’s and don’ts and Fido will be the model holiday companion and will be invited back year after year after year.”
Holiday homes – remember to check before booking that the holiday home you are staying at allows dogs to stay. If you are planning an activity-packed break, make sure your four-legged friend can join in otherwise you’ll just spend your holiday dog sitting.
Home comforts – take along some items that will be familiar to your pet, such as his favourite toy and bedding, to help him relax and get into the holiday mood.
Life’s a beach – take advantage of times when you know the beach will be deserted, but don’t ignore signs saying “keep your dog on the lead”, especially when beaches are buzzing with holidaymakers. Not everyone will appreciate sand being kicked in their sandwiches and a wet dog shaking seawater in their faces.
Heat wave – ensure that your dog has plenty of water to drink at all times and keep him out of direct sunlight during the hottest time of the day. Remember, you might be a sun-worshipper, but dogs are not.
Take a bottle of water with you when you are going out and about – walkies can be thirsty work for dogs, especially if it is hot. Keep water in a vacuum flask in the car for emergencies and to keep it cool.
Never leave your dog in the car.
Camping out – check that the campsite is dog-friendly. Remember, it gets cold at night, so keep him cosy with a warm blanket.
