COLOUR TIPS

M&S is launching the first home-grown variety of white asparagus.

Thanks to its popularity with celebrity chefs and health experts and its nutritional benefits, M&S can report that sales of asparagus are up 50% on last year.

M&S, which also sells a purple variety of the vegetable, has been instrumental in giving asparagus a boost by extending the British season which now lasts from April to July – almost double the length it was five years ago.

White asparagus tips go on sale this week priced £2.49 for 100g.

TOP AWARDS

Mey Selections, a brand originally formed by a group of farmers from the north Highlands, has four entries shortlisted in the prestigious Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards 2008, an annual competition open to all Scottish food and drink producers.

Within the Retail Product category, shortlisted entries include the Mey Selections range of chutneys and preserves and Mey Selections Barrogill Whisky – a distinctive blend of malt whiskies, all produced in north Highland distilleries. All Mey Selections products are made from key ingredients sourced from within 100 miles of the Castle of Mey.

In recognition of the relationship between the farmer, producer and consumer, the brand has also been shortlisted in the Supply Chain Award, which acknowledges the fully integrated sustainable approach taken by Mey Selections.

Mey Selections is also the first Scottish SME (Small Medium Enterprise) and one of the first food and drink companies to become involved with the Carbon Trust’s product carbon footprinting and labelling initiative. This, combined with the sustainable approach taken by Mey Selections’ farmers and producers, has led to the brand also being shortlisted for the Environmental Award.

The success story continues for Mey Selections, which is also shortlisted in a national competition, the Supermeat and Fish Awards 2008. The co-branded product Mey Selections and Sainsbury’s Inspired to Cook Beef Rump Steaks with Cheddar and Mustard has been nominated in the Beef category.

Winners of the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards 2008 will be announced on May 8 at the Mansfield Traquir, Edinburgh, while the Supermeat and Fish Awards 2008 will be made at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London, on July 3.
