A BIKE and hike adventure taking place on Mull this summer will cross some of the most breathtaking coastal, mountain and forest terrain Scotland has to offer.

The Mull Traverse will take place on Saturday, August 23.

The event is open to teams of three to six who will complete the course together.

There are bronze, silver, gold and platinum finishes, which range from 24 to 53 miles, to suit people of differing fitness and ability.

The event is organised by the Martyn Bennett Trust and raises money for Marie Curie Cancer Care as well for its own exciting projects.

The trust was formed in 2005 in memory of the late Mull man Martyn Bennett who died at the age of 33 after a struggle with cancer. Mr Bennett, a winner of the coveted Glenfiddich piping award, was one of Scotland’s most innovative young musicians and was dedicated to encouraging young musicians to make the most of their talents through teaching and through sharing his own vision of the possibilities of music. It is this aspect of his legacy that the trust seeks to promote.

Event director Richard Kellett, of Aros Mains on Mull, a close friend of Mr Bennett, said: “I wanted to create a unique challenge to raise money to support the trust and the Marie Curie charity which would incorporate Mr Bennett’s passion for cycling and the outdoors and at the same time show off the varied and spectacular terrain which exists on the island that Martyn loved so much.”

Mr Kellett promised: “Those who accept the challenge will be very well looked after. Participants can choose to take up the free camping on both Friday and Saturday or take advantage of the extensive accommodation that can be found on Mull. After a restful night, the adventurers will gather before the 7am start for breakfast rolls before beginning the adventure on bikes.” Each participant pays a £70 registration fee to enter the event and is required to raise a minimum of £200, which will go to the two charities.
