SOME of the leading names in the fish farming industry will speak during seminars at the Aquaculture UK 2008 exhibition and conference in Aviemore on May 21 and 22.
The event will focus on the key themes of shellfish and new-species farming, critical issues facing the Scottish salmon industry and fish welfare.
Aquaculture 2008 will be opened by Scottish Environment Minister Michael Russell.
Among the speakers will be Howard Day, of Dirt Consultancy, who will highlight how cockle growing could form an alternative source of income for landowners who have lost land to the sea.
The line-up also includes Jimmie Hepburn, of Aquavision, who will reveal details about his pioneering new venture in Devon to grow organic carp for the table, and International Fishmeal Organisation director-general Jonathan Shepherd, who will speak about the current fish oil and meal market and its impact on the Scottish salmon industry.
On the second day of the conference, Compassion in World Farming’s Peter Stevenson will address welfare concerns arising from intensive fish farming and Freedom Food’s Bob Waller will give a talk entitled Better Ways to Farm Fish.
Sunil Kadri, of Aquaculture Innovation, will give an update on the Benefish project and its attempts to evaluate and model the costs and benefits of welfare management in aquaculture.
Delegates will have a chance to question the speakers at the end of the seminars.
Aquaculture 2008 managing director David Mack said: “The conference programme is sure to incite comment and debate and with influential visitors expected from over 20 countries it will be a truly international event.”
