A chance to be discovered

IF THE thought of working in a profession where you’re stuck behind a desk for eight hours a day doesn’t appeal to you, then it will be worth paying a visit to a special event being held in Aberdeen.
If you dream about becoming a TV or film star, singer, dancer, actor, TV presenter, stand-up comedian or top model, you have the chance to show scouts from the acclaimed AMTC (Actors, Models and Talent Convention) your talents when they visit the city in May.
The convention has had more than 27 years of success in America, but this will be its first time in Europe. Participants will have the opportunity to perform to 50-150 leading industry professionals from TV, film, music, dance and fashion.
The convention will take place at Disneyland Paris in November.
There won’t be much time to hang out with Mickey Mouse and his friends, though, because as well as having the chance to perform for top agents and casting directors, there will be a packed schedule of workshops, speed networking sessions, callbacks, plenty of advice on how to pursue a career in the industry and, for the lucky ones, maybe even a screen test.
In the north-east, it’s hard to be seen by top agents and casting directors, so applying to attend AMTC in November could open a lot of doors for budding young performers.
AMTC has hundreds of recognisable success stories of people working in films, TV and theatre, as well as professional singers and models with major agencies around the world.
Big-name models and movie stars such as Mena Suvari and Dakota Fanning started out at AMTC. Closer to home, Sam Angell, who travelled to the American version of the convention from Glasgow, signed with a New York and Los Angeles agent and is currently starring as Young Billy in Billy Elliot in the West End. On top of that, one of his classmates won a scholarship to the prestigious New York Film Academy.
In order to prepare for the convention, participants will attend a course of workshops in Aberdeen, as well as monthly training sessions in Edinburgh with leading industry professionals.
AMTC Europe has appointed Clare Haggart and Liz Milne, of Aberdeen’s Phoenix Theatre and Phoenix Youth Theatre, as regional scouts.
Auditions will be held on Saturday, May 24, at Aberdeen Arts Centre, King Street, Aberdeen.
To register for the auditions and for more information, including fees and costs, contact the local scouts at phoenix_theatre @hotmail.com or on 01224 863946. For additional information about AMTC, visit www.amtcworld.com
